The Law of Kindness
by Sandy Ohlman
Can you remember back to your high school science class? For some of us, that’s a long trip down memory lane. Remember sitting at those long tables with your lab partners beside you, eagerly awaiting the day when you could use the “Bunsen burner”? It brings back memories of watching the boys in class render small flammable objects to the flame – hoping not to be discovered by the teacher. I wasn’t the best science student but I really enjoyed the class time that involved doing the experiments that would test the laws of science. Now years later, though no longer in a formal school setting, I remain a student fascinated by the ‘life’ laws that can be traced throughout history and proven true today.
Just as there are the physical laws, such as the law of gravity or motion, there are spiritual laws that govern the universe. These laws were set into existence by God at the beginning of time. Like the laws of science, they are universal pillars. Throughout time, as man has discovered and implemented both the truths of science and those of the spiritual nature, humanity has seen an improved quality of life. Consider how understanding the laws of ‘motion’, ‘gravity’ and ‘lift’ has sent men into space; or how the development of the laser has effected the medical field. It has been to our benefit to gain understanding of natural laws. However, much more significant to our existence than any scientific study is the knowledge and understanding of the wisdom of God. God’s spiritual laws for living create and sustain the highest quality of life.
One of the most significant spiritual laws set into motion by God is the law of kindness. God uses kindness – the expression of His goodness – to draw people to Himself. “The kindness of God leads men to repentance.” (Romans 2:4) Kindness is as powerful as gravity. Implementing this power in our lives is the desire of God, that His character would be reproduced in us and that the lives of others would be changed. When the kindness of God is brought into the atmosphere - change is inevitable.
Though it’s always been my goal to be kind, I was recently challenged but this truth and decided to step it up a notch. Amped up with love, I purposed to give a greater level of kindness to those within my influence. I started at home with my family and saw great results. Then, I took it to the work place. While I would like to say it worked on everyone, I found that the only thing that can resist the law of kindness is a hard heart. Overall, the majority of the people I encountered were very receptive to my actions and I got to know some really great people in the process. Professionally, the tension reduced and the workmanship improved. Through my observations I found that pride was the only thing that opposed kindness. Even my own pride got in the way a couple times and rendered me incapable of giving kindness.
Kindness produces results and proves over and over that there is a spiritual law in effect. When extended and received there is a positive, powerful result. It requires humility to function and has immeasurable potential for rendering change. In a world that is growing increasingly negative and cynical, kindness is like a bright shining beacon. Proverbs 31:26(AMP) teaches us that a great woman of God mixes kindness with wisdom, “She opens her mouth in skillful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness [giving counsel and instruction].”
Want to make a difference and bring change to your world? Start with kindness – it’s the welcome mat to God.
